Deprecated features in Wowza Streaming Engine

Support for different technologies and features in Wowza Streaming Engine™ media server software evolves with each release. With new releases, certain features may no longer be recommended and are considered deprecated. Later, deprecated features are sunset and not supported in the latest version(s) of Wowza Streaming Engine. When features are deprecated with a Wowza Streaming Engine release, the deprecation is listed in the release notes. This article identifies deprecated features across the most recent versions of Wowza Streaming Engine and provides more information about the deprecation and sunsetting. After a feature is sunset, it is removed from this list.

Microsoft Smooth Streaming

Microsoft Smooth Streaming is deprecated with Wowza Streaming Engine 4.8.12. By default, Microsoft Smooth Streaming is disabled in new applications created with Wowza Streaming Engine 4.8.12. Applications created in earlier versions of Wowza Streaming Engine are unchanged after upgrading to Wowza Streaming Engine 4.8.12.

Microsoft announced the end of support for Silverlight after October 2021, limiting the playback support for Microsoft Smooth Streaming streams in browsers. For more information, see Silverlight End of Support. We recommend using other HTTP streaming protocols, such as HLS or MPEG-DASH.

To disable Microsoft Smooth Streaming for an existing application, open your application's Application.xml configuration file ([install-dir]/conf/[application-name]) and remove smoothstreaming from the <HTTPStreamers> property and smoothstreamingpacketizer or smoothstreamingrepeater from the <LiveStreamPacketizers> property.

Adobe HDS

Adobe HDS streaming is deprecated with Wowza Streaming Engine 4.8.12. By default, Adobe HDS is disabled in new applications created with Wowza Streaming Engine 4.8.12. Applications created in earlier versions of Wowza Streaming Engine are unchanged after upgrading to Wowza Streaming Engine 4.8.12.

Adobe no longer supports Flash Player and stopped content from running in it, limiting the playback support for Adobe HDS streams. For more information, see Adobe Flash Player EOL General Information Page. We recommend using other HTTP streaming protocols, such as HLS or MPEG-DASH.

To disable Adobe HDS for an existing application, open your application's Application.xml configuration file ([install-dir]/conf/[application-name]) and remove sanjosestreaming from the <HTTPStreamers> property and sanjosestreamingpacketizer or sanjosestreamingrepeatersanjosestreamingrepeater from the <LiveStreamPacketizers> property.
