Announcing: DRM Technology and MPEG-DASH Support in Wowza Video
We’ve teamed up with EZDRM to boost content security in Wowza Video. More specifically, we’ve added sophisticated digital rights management (DRM) technology and MPEG-DASH support to our cloud streaming service.
So, what does it all mean? This enhancement gives content distributors the ability to protect their premium content from piracy or illegal redistribution — while also limiting playback to legitimate end users. Because unauthorized access can compromise revenue and expose private information, security is key.
“The growing popularity of cloud-based streaming deployments demands that we offer our customers robust choices for studio-approved content protection,” explains our CEO Dave Stubenvoll. “The EZDRM DRM as a Service (DRMaaS) solution provides a powerful resource for Wowza customers looking to monetize and secure premium content delivery.”
As part of this enhancement, Wowza Video now supports all major studio-approved DRM providers, including Apple FairPlay, Google Widevine, and Microsoft PlayReady. Video content is encrypted on the fly with media keys protected by one or more DRM licensing systems, preventing playback until validated.
One organization already benefiting from this new solution is Magycal, a leading media platform for digital content.
“The Wowza Video solution that we were already using on our OTT product went one step further with the new DRMaaS technology,” said Pedro Centieiro, COO of Magycal. “In a matter of days, we were supporting DRM on live streams, both on HLS and MPEG-DASH, in all major browsers, mobile devices, and TV apps. Protecting premium content is a major concern of our clients, and thanks to Wowza and EZDRM, we are now able to provide an engaging, interactive and secure environment — whether they are watching live or video on demand (VOD) content.”
Not to Mention, Support for MPEG-DASH
Wowza Video also now supports MPEG-DASH, the open standard for HTTP-based adaptive bitrate streaming. As the default protocol for YouTube and Netflix, DASH ensures high-quality streaming experiences across various devices. It’s also a great alternative to proprietary streaming technologies like Apple’s HLS.
Some of the benefits of DASH include:
- High quality: Adaptive bitrate streaming ensures video is delivered at the highest quality possible based on each end-user’s connection, software, and device.
- Multi-DRM support: MPEG-DASH underpins Wowza’s DRM technology to enable content protection across platforms like Microsoft PlayReady and Google Widevine.
- Cost-effective: The HTTP-based format is affordable to deploy and easy to scale because it uses traditional network servers and technology.
