Wowza Teams Up with Microsoft to Deliver MPEG-DASH Live Broadcast Streaming with Common Encryption
Wowza Media Server® Enables ‘Common Encryption’ Using Microsoft PlayReady to Deliver DASH Content to New DASH-264 iOS and Android Clients from Microsoft
EVERGREEN, Colo. — September 13, 2013 — Wowza Media Systems, LLC, provider of Simply Powerful Streaming™ media server software, today announced that customers will soon be able to deliver live and on-demand protected content using MPEG-DASH streaming from Wowza Media Server® to media players built on the new Microsoft PlayReady SDKs for Android and iOS. These new SDKs augment the DASH playback capabilities that Microsoft demonstrated last June in Internet Explorer 11, allowing customers to now reach their end users with protected DASH content on any connected device.
“Microsoft is working with companies across the media delivery spectrum to provide the best content enablement and protection on the widest range of devices and services,” said Hayete Gallot, Senior Director for Microsoft Corp.’s PlayReady business. “Wowza is a valued industry partner and has been at the forefront of streaming media technologies. Wowza Media Server has been successfully used for many years to deliver multiple streaming formats, including PlayReady-protected Smooth Streaming. With the availability of the iOS and Android SDKs from Microsoft later this year, Wowza is poised to provide broadcasters and other content providers with DASH streaming that is protected using Microsoft PlayReady.”
Robust support in Wowza Media Server for the international MPEG-DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) standard includes subtitles and Common Encryption with key rotation, both popular features with broadcasters. It’s now possible to take in a single HD stream from an encoder such as Wowza GoCoder, convert the stream and create additional quality levels with Wowza Transcoder AddOn, and then protect and deliver the content using DASH and other streaming formats to any screen, from mobile devices to desktops to televisions. Viewers benefit from the highest quality video their device and bandwidth allow, closed captioning, crisp dynamic overlays, and advanced playback controls. The Wowza implementation of DASH adheres to the DASH-AVC/264 implementation guidelines issued by the DASH Industry Forum (DASH-IF), of which Wowza is a Contributor Member.
“Wowza is constantly innovating to provide new ways for customers to deliver content to as many endpoints as possible,” said Dave Stubenvoll, CEO and co-founder of Wowza Media Systems. “Our long history of adaptive streaming, content protection support, and strong relationships with Microsoft and Microsoft PlayReady partners have allowed us to move quickly to embrace DASH streaming with Common Encryption across multiple operating systems and form factors.”
Wowza Media Server will include a preview of support for Common Encryption using Microsoft PlayReady in the next release. For details on current DASH support see www.wowza.com/products/streaming-engine/specifications.
